This is a quick sketch to capture some of the spirit of the International Association for Public Participation (Australasia)‘s Engagement without Borders event happening on the 29th May at the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne.
The day is described as an ‘inclusive engagement feast’ – and will include the Afghan tea cycle which I’ve drawn a bit of in my picture. Any event held at the wonderful Abbotsford Convent is guaranteed to be something special.

The look of the cartoon is a bit different as it is my first serious attempt at drawing on an iPad, with finger and stylus. I was away from my office, computer, scanner etc this week – so it was a good test.
SA Kids is a parenting magazine, published in South Australia. An ongoing feature in the magazine has been the story of baby Stone. The story began before Stone was born and has been updated in each monthly (and now bi-monthly) edition.

Water on the Moon! Water on Mars! Earth-like planets out there!
As this planet fails to meet our expectations some of us seem to be comforted by the idea that we could ‘trade up’, move on to something a little better.
I don’t think they intend taking all of us with them of course.
The cheaper option is to find some alien life out there that in some way could rescue us … from ourselves.

No one asks for gratuitous ideas but here you go …
Each month I send two or three draft cartoon ideas to the New Internationalist editors. They can select which one will suit. The cartoon needs to ‘work’ of course. It also needs to still be topical in six weeks time – when the issue being prepared comes out. That is tricky.
The rough drafts are real ‘cartoons’ in the original sense of the word – sketched out preliminary drawings for some finished art work. It’s a bit odd but they often look more fresh and lively than the finished cartoon.
