A community exhibition to mark one year on after the devastating Sampson Flat bushfire here in South Australia was held earlier this year. A number of community organisations were involved. The Red Cross section featured feedback and comments from interviews  with the community affected by the bushfire by local  Jeff Ayers in the weeks following the event . Here are some of the cartoon posters, based on the interviews, from the display.

Rapid appraisal of emerging issues in the oil palm sector in Palawan Island (The Philippines): Environment, livelihoods and corporate accountability, was a scoping report produced by a collaboration between Palawan State University and the Stockholm Environment Institute. It aimed  ‘to feed the ‘rich picture’ that emerges from the preliminary results back to people in Palawan’.

As part of the feeding back the results these three diagrams were developed to be used in presentations. There was a lot of ‘rich picture’ to juggle onto each page.

Moorabool Shire Council, in country Victoria, Australia held its Vibrant Communities Conference 2013, in the Ballan Mechanics Institute Hall ,on the 20th of April.

I was there to cartoon the issues and ideas that emerged in the workshops and sessions. Cartooning on the spot, among people passionate about their community and its future is a dose of reality.

It is also a good test for the cartoons. Do they help capture what people are feeling and saying? Do they have ‘yes we can’ positiveness? (Tricky, cartooning lends itself to more negative ways of looking at things). Can they help remind participants of the conference discussions weeks and months down the track?

It is that mnemonic role of cartoons, and other images, that gives them value after the fun on the day.

Hans T from Germany is a cartoon fan and is writing to cartoonists around the world hoping to get back a signed ‘pig-ture’, he and his wife being collectors of pig cartoons.

Here’s my attempt….

Cleanskin sheep are ideal easy-care meat sheep for new farmers.  A new website provides basic information about keeping these wool-less breeds of sheep. To visit Cleanskin Sheep Information click here.

In a world where, although it appears economical to jet Canadian pork around the world to Australia, for example, there is a growing movement for promoting – and celebrating – local produce; the sharing of this sort of information is valuable.

And it is about all food, not only meat, of course.

The website also gives an opportunity for cartoons to help highlight some of the issues – and give sheep a voice.
