Robo-psyched?

Machines can do most of a psychologist’s job. The industry must prepare for disruption. There are 39,000 registered psychologists working in Australia and there are 122,000 members of the American Psychological Association. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence how many will have full employment within the next decade?

University of South Australia Adjunct Professor Mike Innes developed the original concept for this comic. Together with Macquarie University Senior Lecturer, Organisational Psychology, Ben Morrison, they have been alerting psychologists, students and anyone considering psychology as a career, to the impact AI is going to have on the profession.

Many years ago Mike Innes was my honours supervisor. Working with him on this project has been wonderful fun!

20 Years of Restorative Justice – comic

The South Australian courts have released a comic book to celebrate 20 years of restorative justice for young offenders; read more  here. The comic, written by Marnie Doig and drawn by me, was actually created 20 years ago, at the beginning of the family conference based system.

I drew the comic before the benefits of computer, scanner and tablet. Corrections were made using white-out,  the black areas filled in with marker pens, no shading was possible, just lots of cross-hatching. Ah, those were the days…

The Continence Gang

The Continence Gang – published in 2001 – was a comic book written by Esther Quintal for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Esther wrote that ‘Continence is something my people do not understand … It is clear that incontinence is a problem and causes shame for many’. It was a challenge getting the ideas and messages into pictures, but  a lot of fun as  Esther encouraged me not to hold back.

Last week Marjory Kobold, one of the coordinators of the project phoned to say that Esther had died.

Esther’s book was one of the most popularly requested Government publications. Here is the cover and opening story:

School Nightmare!

Most people have had a back-at-school bad dream.  I’m sure it’s good therapy to work through it, write it down, reconstruct the story, deconstruct the story and see what the entrails can tell you.

My bad school dream seemed to focus on Mr Perkins’ French class …
