Sweet and Sour …

Sweet and Sour is a children’s story by David Novak – A Telling Experience. He brings his story to life in his wonderful way. The illustrations were first drawn as cards to tell the story using a kamishibai, a Japanese paper theatre stage. The story was inspired by the stories David read to his son Jack, ‘especially the tale of Momotaro and the evil Oni (ogres)’.

I met David Novak at the 2016 Sydney International Storytelling Conference and we met up again in 2018. We talked about a simple animation of one of his stories. It was only recently, with the help of a grant David received for the kamishibai stage and pictures, that we got it together.

The Storytelling Conferences are wonderful events attracting storytellers from around the world – creating a feast of stories and presentations. And great inspiration for pictures! I have cartooned at a number of the conferences – see posts from 2025 and 2016.

WHO #Film4Health – Dalal’s Story …

Dalal’s Story is one of 16 finalists in the World Health Organisation‘s 2024 Health for All Film Festival – Category 2: Emergencies, Migrants and Refugees Health. The film was produced by Laundry Lane, illustrations: Simon Kneebone, animation: Santiago Dutil, edited by: Claire Cooper-Southam, sound: Alex Armour. The film was commissioned by STARTTS Refugee Support Services. A longer version combined two refugee family stories, one Yazidi and one Rohingya; see the post for Mohammed and Dalal here.

From the Film Festival: ‘The public is encouraged to choose one of the films they would like to champion and comment about its story/topic, before the end of May 2024. Comments can be posted on their social media using #Film4Health or through the posts inserted in those YouTube playlists‘.

UPDATE:

Such exciting news from Laundry Lane!  ‘Dalal’s Story’ has just been announced as the winner for the ‘Emergencies, Migrants and Refugees Health’ category in WHO’s 5th Health for All Film Festival.

Resilience revived …

Two videos by Laundry Lane Productions for STARTTS, the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors. STARTTS developed the scripts from which I drew storyboards and, after feedback, the illustrations. The illustration pieces for each scene were animated, along with voiceover and sound, by Santiago Dutil.

It’s a job finding a job

The Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union is working on a comprehensive guide to inform unemployed workers of their rights. This animation encourages people to get involved in the production of an easy to read summary of the Job Active Government Guidelines.

Whiteboard animation: Class Teaching eJournal

A whiteboard style animation for the Class Teaching website explaining the value of their eJournal for teachers and school leaders.

CSR animation

Here is a whiteboard style animation for Aspen Medical, outlining their Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) programs. It is almost 5 minutes long – which is quite long to hold a casual viewer’s attention (the animation is aimed at new staff members).  The animation has also broken down into five ‘chapters’ for added versatility.
